Discord and proxies: routing the app through a French mobile IP

Discord has no proxy setting. How to route it through a French mobile IP, voice included, and when it is of no use at all.

update Updated

Unlike Telegram, Discord offers no proxy setting in its app. So you have to take another route. Before choosing which one, let us check that you need it.

What a proxy does not do on Discord

It does not hide your address from other members. Messages and voice both go through Discord's servers: other users never see your IP. If that is your concern, you are already protected, without paying anything.

It does not lift a sanction. An account that is suspended, or banned from a server, is so for what it did. Coming back with another account on another address is forbidden by Discord's rules, and we will not help you do it.

When it is useful

The starting address is the problem. Connections coming from consumer VPNs or hosting providers are more often asked for phone verification, according to many user reports. A dedicated French mobile line goes out of those shared ranges: see Collective punishment.

Separating a professional account. You moderate the server of a brand, a game, an association: that account can go out through its own address, distinct from your personal account's. This is the principle of Compartmentalizing what you do.

A network that filters Discord, when traveling for instance.

Three ways to plug in the proxy

Method Messages Voice and video Difficulty
Discord in the browser Yes See below Easy
Proxifier on the app Yes With UDP relay Medium
WireGuard tunnel Yes Yes Easy

In the browser

Open Discord at discord.com/app in a browser profile set to the proxy, with FoxyProxy or an antidetect browser. Messages go through without difficulty.

Voice, however, uses WebRTC, which runs over UDP and can bypass an HTTP proxy. Depending on the browser, it either fails or goes out through your real connection. Read WebRTC and DNS leaks before relying on voice this way.

With Proxifier

Proxifier forces the Discord app through the SOCKS5 proxy. Messages follow; for voice, the proxy must relay UDP (the UDP option, chosen when ordering) and Proxifier must be set to hand it over.

With the WireGuard tunnel

This is the simplest method when you want everything: the WireGuard tunnel sends the whole device out through the mobile line, voice and video included. It is also the only clean way to do it on a phone, since the Discord mobile app has no proxy setting either.

The trade-off: the whole device goes through the tunnel, not just Discord.

Which plan

Use What fits
Messages, moderation Essential: a fixed IPv4 is enough
Lots of voice or screen sharing A plan with unlimited data: video quickly eats a quota

A stable address is preferable: Discord has no reason to see your IP change in the middle of a session.

FAQ

Can I have one proxy per account in the same app?

No. Discord lets you switch between several accounts, but the whole app goes out through the same route. For two addresses, you need two browser profiles, each on its own proxy.

Can the proxy's number validate my Discord account?

Technically yes. But that number follows the SIM card, not you: on an account you keep, prefer your own number and an authenticator app. See Receiving SMS.
