What is a mobile proxy?
An IP address that comes from a real 4G/5G SIM card. How CGNAT works, how radio rotation works, and why antifraud filters tolerate it.

The technical definition, no detour
A mobile proxy is a network gateway connected to the internet through a physical SIM card sitting in a modem or a dedicated smartphone. When your requests travel through that equipment, websites do not see your fixed line or your server: they see the IP address handed out by a mobile carrier (Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free).
Your traffic goes over a consumer 4G or 5G network, exactly as if you were browsing from a phone in the street.
The key role of CGNAT: why a mobile IP is tolerated
On cellular networks, carriers do not have enough IPv4 addresses for every subscriber. To work around that limit they use a technology called CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT).
CGNAT groups hundreds, sometimes thousands of real phones behind a single public IP address at the same moment.
That detail changes everything for antifraud engines:
- If a platform bluntly blocks a datacenter IP address, it stops a server with no collateral damage.
- If that same platform blocks a 4G/5G mobile IP address, it instantly cuts off dozens of legitimate users connected through the same cell tower.
Platforms (marketplaces, social networks, ad networks) are therefore forced to apply far more lenient rules on mobile IP ranges. That is the technical origin of their high trust score.
What a mobile proxy allows, and its real limits
A mobile proxy is a targeted tool, particularly effective where access controls are strict.
Its strengths
- A consumer carrier ASN: your address comes from Orange, SFR or Bouygues, not from a host like OVH or AWS.
- Creating and running sensitive accounts: well suited to e-commerce profiles, classified listings or multi-account social media work.
- Radio rotation on demand: you can renew the IP address by forcing the line to disconnect, without changing hardware.
Its real limits
- Radio latency: a 4G/5G cellular connection naturally has higher latency and more jitter than a fiber line in a datacenter. For heavy scraping of unprotected data, a datacenter proxy stays vastly faster and cheaper.
- It is not a magic shield: a clean mobile IP does not make up for an inconsistent browser fingerprint, WebRTC leaks or abusive behavior on an account. The IP address is only one parameter among many in a security algorithm's decision.
Dedicated or shared: a decisive distinction
Not every mobile proxy provider uses the same architecture.

How IP rotation works
Changing IP on a mobile proxy is not a switch to another server in the cloud. It reproduces what a smartphone does when you turn airplane mode on and off:
- The equipment briefly drops its radio session with the cell tower.
- The mobile carrier releases the IP address it had allocated.
- On reconnection, the carrier's infrastructure hands out a new dynamic address taken from its mobile subscriber range.
The whole operation takes a few seconds. You trigger it from your account, by calling your rotation link, or automatically at a fixed interval.
What a rotation does not guarantee
The next address is drawn from the carrier's pool, not chosen by us. Two consequences, measured on our own fleet:
- You can land back in the same range, or even on an address you have already seen. Pool width varies enormously between carriers: Free and Bouygues run several dozen, Orange around fifteen, SFR far fewer. On a carrier with a narrow pool, several rotations in a row often stay in the same neighborhood of addresses.
- IPv4 and IPv6 change together, because they are allocated at the same instant, when the new network session opens.
If what you need is a markedly different address every time, the carrier you pick matters more than how often you rotate.
Security and data handling: is traffic intercepted?
On a serious proxy there is no traffic interception (no man-in-the-middle attack, or MITM).
When you visit an HTTPS website:
- Your browser sets up an end-to-end encrypted tunnel with the target server, through the HTTP
CONNECTcommand or theSOCKS5protocol. - The mobile modem carries the encrypted packets without being able to read your passwords, your sessions or your personal data.
- Your TLS fingerprint stays strictly identical to your own browser's, which avoids interception-tool detections.
On top of that, the connection's TCP signature is adjusted to stay consistent with the operating system your browser announces. The detail is explained in TCP OS spoofing.
FAQ
Mobile, residential or datacenter: which one?
Mobile for demanding platforms and long-lived account management. Residential for fine geographic targeting on fixed lines. Datacenter for speed and volume, on targets that do not filter.
Is a mobile proxy safe?
Yes, provided you go through a serious provider. At FRProxy encrypted traffic is never opened along the way: your TLS fingerprint stays your browser's.
How long do you keep the same IP address?
For as long as you do not ask for a rotation, with one caveat: a network drop on the carrier's side can trigger a new allocation. That is how a mobile line normally behaves, not an incident.
